What Zinc Oxide does
It absorbs and scatters across UVB and the full UVA range, including UVA1, which most single organic filters cover poorly.
It is photostable, meaning it does not break down under sun exposure the way avobenzone can without stabilisers.
Worth using if…
- Sensitive, reactive and post-procedure skin
- Rosacea and melasma
- Children's sunscreen
Safety & watch-outs
- White cast on medium and deep skin tones, unless tinted or heavily optimised.
- High-zinc formulas can feel dry or draggy.
- Nano vs non-nano is a common concern; regulatory reviews have not found evidence of nano zinc penetrating intact skin.
Zinc Oxide in pregnancy: Not on standard avoid lists
Mineral filters are the ones most often recommended during pregnancy.
Fungal acne (): does not feed it
Mineral UV filter. The fungal-acne yeast feeds on fatty acids roughly C11–C24 and the esters built from them, so what matters in a finished formula is the whole list, not one ingredient.

Rated low on the Fulton scale, though heavy mineral bases can feel congesting. Ratings come from the published Fulton scale, which was measured on rabbit ears rather than human faces — treat it as a rough signal, not a verdict on a finished formula.

Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical?
Not inherently. It is less irritating for reactive skin; modern organic filters give better cosmetic elegance and often better UVA numbers per gram.
Informational only, not medical advice. Written from public regulatory and dermatology references (EU Cosmetics Regulation annexes, SCCS opinions, CIR reviews, published Fulton-scale data). Concentration, formula and your own skin all change the outcome — consult a clinician for personal concerns.
