What Panthenol does

In skin, panthenol converts to pantothenic acid, a component of coenzyme A involved in barrier lipid synthesis and wound repair.

It has a well-documented soothing effect on irritated, stinging or freshly treated skin, which is why it appears in aftercare formulas.

Worth using if…

  • Irritated or stinging skin
  • Post-retinoid or post-procedure recovery
  • Dry, flaky patches

Safety & watch-outs

  • Genuinely allergic reactions are rare but documented; patch test if you react to a lot of things.

Fungal acne (): does not feed it

Provitamin B5, not a lipid. The fungal-acne yeast feeds on fatty acids roughly C11–C24 and the esters built from them, so what matters in a finished formula is the whole list, not one ingredient.

Comedogenic rating: 0/5 · non-comedogenic

Non-comedogenic. Ratings come from the published Fulton scale, which was measured on rabbit ears rather than human faces — treat it as a rough signal, not a verdict on a finished formula.

Common questions

Is panthenol the same as 'cica'?

No — cica refers to Centella asiatica. They often appear together because both are used for calming.

Informational only, not medical advice. Written from public regulatory and dermatology references (EU Cosmetics Regulation annexes, SCCS opinions, CIR reviews, published Fulton-scale data). Concentration, formula and your own skin all change the outcome — consult a clinician for personal concerns.
