Why no green tick
Why we won't say 'pregnancy-safe'
There is no single global authority on this. FDA, EMA, MFDA and individual obstetric bodies publish different lists, and almost none of them are based on trials in pregnant people — for obvious ethical reasons. What exists is caution inherited from oral drug data plus absorption modelling.
Concentration matters more than presence. A 2% salicylic acid toner and a 30% in-clinic peel share an ingredient and nothing else. Our checker can see the name on the list; it cannot see the percentage, because brands rarely publish it.
Alternatives
Commonly suggested swaps
- Instead of retinol: azelaic acid, niacinamide, or bakuchiol — all with far less caution attached.
- Instead of high-strength BHA: low-strength lactic or mandelic acid.
- Instead of debated chemical UV filters: a mineral sunscreen based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
