What Salicylic Acid does
Because it is lipophilic, salicylic acid travels into sebum-filled pores and loosens the plug of dead cells and oil, rather than only working on the surface like glycolic acid.
It is also anti-inflammatory (it is chemically related to aspirin), which is why spots look calmer as well as fewer.
Worth using if…
- Blackheads and clogged pores
- Oily, congested skin
- Body acne and keratosis pilaris
Safety & watch-outs
- Drying with daily use on already-dry skin; two to three times a week is usually enough.
- Stacking it with retinoids or benzoyl peroxide on the same night is a fast route to a damaged barrier.
- Salicylate allergy is uncommon but real.
Salicylic Acid in pregnancy: Commonly avoided in pregnancy
Guidance usually tolerates occasional low-percentage leave-off products but advises against wide-area or high-strength use, and against oral salicylates. This is a conversation for your midwife or doctor, not a website.
Fungal acne (): works against it
Keratolytic — helps clear blocked follicles. The fungal-acne yeast feeds on fatty acids roughly C11–C24 and the esters built from them, so what matters in a finished formula is the whole list, not one ingredient.
Check a whole formula for malassezia triggers →Comedogenic rating: 0/5 · non-comedogenic
Non-comedogenic; it actively works against pore plugs. Ratings come from the published Fulton scale, which was measured on rabbit ears rather than human faces — treat it as a rough signal, not a verdict on a finished formula.

BHA or AHA for blackheads?
BHA. Only the oil-soluble one reaches inside the pore.
Can I use it every day?
Some skin tolerates a 0.5–2% leave-on daily; most people do better at 2–3 times a week.
Informational only, not medical advice. Written from public regulatory and dermatology references (EU Cosmetics Regulation annexes, SCCS opinions, CIR reviews, published Fulton-scale data). Concentration, formula and your own skin all change the outcome — consult a clinician for personal concerns.
