Is Lactic Acid safe during pregnancy?

Ask your doctor. Guidance is split, so this is one to clear with your midwife, GP or dermatologist before using.

  • Informational, not medical advice
  • Sourced from published guidance

The short answer

Generally viewed as lower concern than retinoids, but confirm with your clinician.

On labels you may see it as: AHA, milk acid.

Context

What Lactic Acid does

Its larger molecule penetrates more slowly than glycolic acid, giving a milder exfoliation with less sting.

Lactate is also part of the skin's natural moisturising factor, so it hydrates as it exfoliates — unusual for an acid.

Typical use on shelf: 5%–10% in leave-on serums and lotions..

Watch-outs

What to keep in mind

  • Still increases sun sensitivity — wear sunscreen.
  • Higher strengths (10%+) are not beginner territory.

Next step

Check your whole routine, not one ingredient

One ingredient rarely decides anything. Paste the full list from each product you use into the pregnancy ingredient checker and take the flags to your clinician. The full write-up on Lactic Acid — what it does, irritation, pore-clogging risk — is on the Lactic Acid explainer.
