Is Azelaic Acid safe during pregnancy?

Not on standard avoid lists. It is not on the standard pregnancy avoid lists, and it is one of the ingredients most often kept in a routine.

  • Informational, not medical advice
  • Sourced from published guidance

The short answer

Azelaic acid is one of the few acne and pigment actives routinely recommended during pregnancy. Still clear it with your own clinician first.

On labels you may see it as: azelaic.

Context

What Azelaic Acid does

It is antibacterial against acne-causing bacteria, normalises keratinisation inside the pore, and inhibits tyrosinase to fade post-acne marks.

It also reduces the inflammatory response behind rosacea flushing, which is why prescription strengths are a standard rosacea treatment.

Typical use on shelf: 10% over the counter; 15%–20% by prescription..

Watch-outs

What to keep in mind

  • Can cause temporary tingling or itching in the first two weeks.
  • Cosmetic 10% formulas are weaker than prescription 15–20%.

Next step

Check your whole routine, not one ingredient

One ingredient rarely decides anything. Paste the full list from each product you use into the pregnancy ingredient checker and take the flags to your clinician. The full write-up on Azelaic Acid — what it does, irritation, pore-clogging risk — is on the Azelaic Acid explainer.
