Is Dimethicone safe during pregnancy?

Not on standard avoid lists. It is not on the standard pregnancy avoid lists, and it is one of the ingredients most often kept in a routine.

  • Informational, not medical advice
  • Sourced from published guidance

The short answer

Not on standard pregnancy avoid lists.

On labels you may see it as: silicone, polydimethylsiloxane.

Context

What Dimethicone does

It creates a semi-occlusive layer that slows water loss without the heaviness of petrolatum, and it fills in surface texture optically.

It is inert, non-reactive and one of the least allergenic ingredients in cosmetics, which is why it appears in barrier creams and eczema products.

Typical use on shelf: 1%–10% in moisturisers, primers and sunscreens..

Watch-outs

What to keep in mind

  • It does not 'suffocate' skin — that claim has no basis — but it can trap other ingredients underneath it.
  • Some people find it pills under sunscreen or makeup.

Next step

Check your whole routine, not one ingredient

One ingredient rarely decides anything. Paste the full list from each product you use into the pregnancy ingredient checker and take the flags to your clinician. The full write-up on Dimethicone — what it does, irritation, pore-clogging risk — is on the Dimethicone explainer.
