Moisturisers look like the most crowded category in skincare and are in fact the most repetitive. Nearly all of them are combinations of three ingredient families, in different ratios and textures. Once you can name the families, the shelf collapses into a handful of genuine options.
The three families
Humectants pull water into the upper skin layers: glycerin, hyaluronic acid / sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, urea, betaine, propanediol. Glycerin is the most studied and most effective per penny in the entire category. Hyaluronic acid markets better and performs comparably.
Emollients fill the gaps between skin cells, giving softness and slip: squalane, caprylic/capric triglyceride, isopropyl myristate, plant oils, dimethicone and other silicones.
Occlusives slow water loss from the surface: petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone, shea butter, waxes. Petrolatum remains the most effective occlusive known, at roughly the price of nothing.
Barrier lipids are the fourth, more specialised group: ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids, ideally together. This is the trio that makes up the skin's own lipid matrix, and the evidence for ceramide-containing moisturisers in dry and eczema-prone skin is solid.
What "best moisturiser for oily skin" actually means
Oily skin still loses water; sebum is not hydration. What oily skin does not need is a heavy occlusive layer that traps everything under it. Look for:
- a gel or gel-cream texture
- glycerin high on the list
- light emollients (squalane, light esters, dimethicone) rather than butters
- no heavy plant butters or thick waxes in the top five
If a "gel cream" lists shea butter third, it is a cream wearing a gel's name.
For dry and very dry skin
Layer the families rather than hunting for one perfect jar: a humectant-rich step on damp skin, then a cream with ceramides and a real occlusive to hold it. Applying humectants alone in low humidity can make dryness feel worse, because glycerin and hyaluronic acid will pull water from wherever they can find it if nothing seals the surface.
For body, the same logic applies with bigger quantities and cheaper ingredients — urea 5–10% and glycerin-plus-petrolatum formulas outperform most premium body lotions.
The texture trap
Texture is engineered independently of performance. A rich, slippery cream can be mostly silicone and water, and a thin lotion can be lipid-dense. The immediate skin-feel at the counter tells you about the emollient system and almost nothing about barrier repair. Judge a moisturiser on how your skin feels four hours later, not four seconds later.
Fragrance, actives, and what to skip
A moisturiser is a leave-on product with high surface contact, which makes it the worst place to accept unnecessary irritants. Fragrance and essential oils are the leading cause of contact reactions in leave-on products. If your skin is reactive, fragrance-free is a stronger predictor of comfort than any active on the label.
Actives in a moisturiser — niacinamide, peptides, retinaldehyde — can be genuinely useful, but they are a bonus. If a cream is priced on its actives and the base is poor, you are paying for the wrong half of the product.
A shortlist you can build in a minute
- Decide the texture bracket your skin needs: gel, gel-cream, lotion, or cream.
- Check that glycerin appears in the top five.
- Look for ceramides plus cholesterol if you are dry, eczema-prone, or using retinoids or acids.
- Rule out fragrance if you are reactive.
- Compare cost per millilitre, not cost per jar. This category has the widest gap between price and formula in all of skincare.
Everything else — the airless pump, the peptide complex with a trademark, the clinical-sounding percentage — is a tiebreaker, not a reason.
