Ingredients that feed fungal acne, ranked by evidence

Malassezia — the yeast behind fungal acne — eats specific fats. Most of the avoid-lists online are copied from a single 1976 study. Here is what is well supported, what is guessed, and what is fine.

Fungal acne is not acne. It is an overgrowth of Malassezia — a yeast that lives on everyone's skin — inside the hair follicle, and it is treated completely differently from bacterial breakouts. The practical question is which skincare ingredients feed the yeast, and this is where the internet's confidence badly outruns the evidence.

The biology in one paragraph

Malassezia cannot make its own fatty acids. It secretes lipase enzymes to break down oils on your skin and harvests the fatty acids it needs — specifically saturated fatty acids with chain lengths around C11 to C24. An ingredient "feeds" Malassezia when it contains those fatty acids in a form the yeast can access. That single mechanism explains the whole avoid-list.

Strong evidence: genuinely feed the yeast

  • Most plant oils — coconut, olive, sweet almond, avocado. Rich in oleic acid (C18) and other fatty acids in Malassezia's preferred range. Olive oil has been shown to worsen seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is caused by the same yeast family.
  • Esters of C12–C24 fatty acids — isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, glyceryl stearate, polysorbates. Esters get hydrolysed by the yeast's lipases, releasing the fatty acid. This is the largest and most overlooked category, because esters are in almost every cream texture.
  • Fermented ingredients — galactomyces and friends. Ferments are a mixed bag, but they are growth media by design; anecdotal flare reports are consistent enough to take seriously.

Weaker evidence: proceed with context

  • Fatty acids themselves (stearic, palmitic, oleic acid listed directly) — same reasoning as esters, direct substrates. Widely avoided, though the original data is old.
  • Some silicones get wrongly blamed. Dimethicone is not metabolised by Malassezia. It ends up on avoid-lists by association, not evidence.

Consistently fine

  • Squalane — the one oil Malassezia cannot use. Saturated and outside its chain-length range.
  • MCT oil / caprylic triglyceride — C8–C10, too short for the yeast to use efficiently.
  • Mineral oil, petrolatum — not metabolised at all.
  • Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, most actives — not lipids, not food.

The honest caveat

Most of the modern avoid-list traces back to a handful of in-vitro and clinical observations, some decades old, plus a very large body of self-experimentation. Individual triggers vary — some people flare from esters, others only from straight oils. Treat the list as a screening filter, not a diagnosis: if your breakouts are uniform, itchy, and resist normal acne treatment, checking your routine for Malassezia food sources is a cheap experiment. And if it persists, a dermatologist can confirm it with a simple scraping — ketoconazole clears in weeks what months of salicylic acid will not touch.
